The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office announced on Apr. 2 the arrest of Akeiriyon Mitchell of Baton Rouge following a high-speed pursuit that began on Interstate 49 and continued onto LA29 toward Ville Platte. Deputies said Mitchell attempted to ram their vehicles and nearly struck several other cars before coming to a stop after several miles.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about public safety during police pursuits and the dangers posed by fleeing suspects. According to authorities, no injuries were reported during the chase, and Mitchell was taken into custody without further incident.
After her arrest, investigators determined that Mitchell had several outstanding warrants from Baton Rouge Police Department for charges including attempted first degree murder, simple burglary, aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated criminal damage to property, aggravated flight from an officer, illegal use of a gun, crime of violence, and aggravated assault with a firearm. The Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office charged her with resisting an officer, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, stop sign and yield signs violations, maximum speed limit violation, aggravated assault with a vehicle against a police officer, and aggravated flight from an officer. Authorities said she is being held without bond and there is also a hold placed for Baton Rouge Police Department.
Sheriff Charles R. Guillory encouraged anyone with information regarding criminal activity to contact the Criminal Investigations Division or submit tips through the agency’s website. “Any person(s) reporting information will remain anonymous,” Guillory said in the statement. He also reminded that all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
The case underscores law enforcement efforts to apprehend individuals wanted for serious crimes while maintaining public safety during dangerous pursuits.
