Fewer students enrolled in St. Landry Parish’s only school district in 2021-22 school year

The only school district in St. Landry Parish suffered declining enrollment in the 2021-22 school year, according to the Louisiana Department of Education.

There were 12,240 students in the halls of St. Landry Parish School District schools, 3.3% lower than the year before.

Enrollment in St. Landry Parish was steady compared to the state’s trend of decreasing enrollment.

Out of all the students welcomed in the 2021-22 school year, 50.9% of them were boys, and 49.1% were girls.

Data also showed that most of the students were Black or African American, representing 56.6% of the St. Landry Parish School Districts total enrollment.

St. Landry Parish School District has a main office in Opelousas and is the only school district within St. Landry Parish.

Only 22% of Louisiana’s teachers are Black or Latino, compared to about 48% of the state's K–12 students who identify as either race.

In 2022, there was roughly one teacher for every 18 students in Louisiana, which is worse than the national average of one teacher for every 16 students.
